The Importance of the Letter
When I first began Alderhaus, I curated an inaugural collection of gifts for people who had made a meaningful impact on my life, and on the lives of those I love. Each gift was chosen with care—pieces I knew would speak to parts of them that mattered most, items that felt like reflections rather than gestures.

But what I was most excited about wasn’t the gift itself. It was the letter.

The letter was my opportunity to tell them how I see them. To name the way their presence feels in a room. To acknowledge how they show up for others—the quiet ways they give, the steadiness they bring, the care they offer without needing recognition. It was my chance to express a gratitude that so often goes unsaid, not because it isn’t felt, but because life seems to move faster than our good intentions.

When it came time to deliver the boxes, I did so personally. I was excited—and nervous. Would they love the gift? Would the letter land the way I hoped? Would my words convey the message I meant them to…or better yet, would they be felt?

What happened next was that the giver became to receiver. The experience was a gift to me. As each person opened their box and began to read, I watched something remarkable unfold. They started reading the letter while carrying all the weight of their lives—the responsibilities, the roles, the pace, the constant doing. And then, slowly, I saw it lift. Shoulders softened. Breaths deepened. Some closed their eyes for a moment. There were tears, quiet smiles, long pauses.

No one rushed.
No one spoke.

For just that moment, they were open. Vulnerable. Fully present. I had imagined there might be conversation afterward—words exchanged about feeling seen or valued. Instead, I witnessed something far more powerful. The letter created a pause in the noise of everyday life. It asked nothing of them except to receive. And in that stillness, connection happened—visibly, unmistakably, in real time.

That was the lesson.

In the relentless pace of our lives, people are craving moments like this. Moments that slow everything down. Moments where they can lay down the weight they carry and simply be seen—without needing to respond, explain, or perform. The letter offered that space. It allowed people to feel recognized not for what they do, but for who they are.

I didn’t need the conversation I believed would follow, I could see it.

That experience affirmed something I hold deeply: meaningful connection doesn’t come from doing more or saying more. It comes from intention. From presence. From taking the time to reflect someone back to themselves with care and honesty.

Letters are not an add-on at Alderhaus. They are the heart of it.

Connection is what I will always be chasing—for myself and for others. And sometimes, the most powerful way to find it is through carefully chosen words, offered with sincerity, and received in quiet.
